Merry Christmas from everyone at Day Treatment!

Pa rum pa pum pum December 12, 2011

Christmas is a coming, but we have had very little snow. We had a sprinkling the other day, but we are still dreaming of a "White Christmas"! Speaking of Christmas carols, Michelle came by and we did our very own version of "The Little Drummer Boy".
It was wonderful fun and good therapy for our arms too!!

Blackhawk College November 30, 2011

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving Day. We are thankful for Larry and the Blackhawk students. They invaded our gym last week and helped us walk, provided us range of motion, and conversation. We had a great time!

The STRIVE Choraleers had their last "on the road" performance for 2011 at Self Help today. We had a grand time!!
This has been an amazing year of accomplishments for the choir. We went to 8 different facilities this year and everyone of them invited us back!! We will perform for our families at the Thanksgiving Dinner next Saturday and then take a break until 2012.

Nebraska October 26, 2011

This month we are studying Nebraska. Who better to teach us then Nebraska's favorite son? Neal Gapinski!
Neal is a huge Cornhusker fan. He came and did a presentation on Nebraska. The residents loved having him visit.

Anger Management October 12, 2011

We have started a new group in the gym called "Anger Management'. Basically we do fun things to counteract any anxiety or anger issues in a positive manner. We like to do things that engage us physically because a "pumping in your chest" heart helps to release anger and frustration. We started out with water noodles and inflatable swords and bonked each other.
I learned that it is really fun to poke Chuck in the ribs with a water noodle while he bangs you in the head with his water noodle because he giggles like a girl. I also learned that Chris gets a look in his eye when he comes after you with his noodle which warns you "it is war!" He does kind of ruin the effect when he snorts with laugher though! I also learned that Yvonne and Larry have REALLY fast chairs as they raced around the gym trying to tag the other one with their noodles.
After everyone was panting from physical exertion and laughter, we gathered up the noodles and pulled out the parachute. Laughter again rang out as we tried to keep the beach ball from bounceing out of the parachute. Some enjoyed the sensation of being underneath the parachute while it was being lifted up and down. When it was all done, everyone left the gym with a grin!

On the road again... September 26, 2011

There has been much travelling the last few weeks for us. Two weeks ago we traveled to the ARC of the Quad Cities to perform. The STRIVE Choraleers celebrated the fact that it was one year since we began our wonderful adventure. Our first "on the road" performance was at the ARC last year. The ARC blessed us with a performance of their own singing for us as a special surprise. They also served us Tacos for lunch. We have forged good friendships there.
Then last week we went to Niabi Zoo. We were able to see their new baby giraffe! That was way cool! We also stayed over and had picnic lunch. It was great fun!

WHACK!! September 8, 2011

We have been studying Brazil. We started in August and with sooo much to learn, we are still learning new facts here in September. However, to cap off the end of August, we had a competition. A trivia competition of sorts where the two "My World" groups faced off -- answering questions about Brazil from what they had already learned. Answer a question correctly; win a chance to take a swipe at the pinata. The residents made the pinatas in crafts with the wonderful help of Joyce (who came back for a visit and assisted in the pinata making). We almost hated to destroy them (they were so pretty) but there was so much pleasure in whacking them that the competition was fierce. After the pinata's were whacked open, I can only say some sort of weird Friday afternoon drug took over. The staff started putting the pinatas on their heads and pretty soon the residents wanted the same privilege. Anyone walking by would have to stop and look for all the giggling.
To say we had fun is an understatement. We had roll around and laugh till you cry fun!!

Comedian August 24, 2011

I would like to welcome our new comedian from Winning Wheels who will become our new "comedy columnist" at the DT Blog. Chris Morrow. Chris is a total cut-up who loves to tell jokes. Yesterday during our "Laugh Out Loud" group it occurs to me--I need to be sharing Chris' humor with the rest of the world!! So on the days his jokes are politically-correct AND "G" rated, I will start posting them here. Colleen and John even put together a moniker for him. So when you see this:

Expect to laugh...

Frank is one of our enthusiastic gardeners. Frank is a hard worker. When Garden Club meets -- he does his part to keep the weeds pulled. Frank would be out every day (and some days twice a day) if he could!!! He enjoys caring for the garden.

BINGO July 14, 2011

We played Bingo this week. Nothing too spectacular except for Jason who won the $5 gift card from Walmart. A lively time is had by all when we play Bingo. Usually a person wins a pop or a candy bar. But Larry Gillund donated some money so they could play for some real prizes!
Like I said, Bingo is a favorite around here and we always have fun. However, when we start playing for the gift card, the sound level raises DRAMATICALLY!!

She did it!!! June 30, 2011

Joyce retired.
I know it is hard to believe, but she really did it!
Joyce retired on June 30th. We had a wonderful retirement party. The theme was Route 66--the route Cal and her want to take and explore now that they are living the life of leisure. We wish Joyce the best. She has been a wonderful nurse, friend, and staff.
WE LOVE YOU JOYCE!! HAPPY RETIREMENT!

It has been wonderful!

Woof! Woof! June 16, 2011
Who let the dogs out? Woof! Woof! Woof! Woof!

This week, dogs came to visit. Dixie from Day Care brought her two bull dogs in and Wayne Snyder stopped in with Kikki again. We just love it with dogs come to visit. We were just reading in health group that dogs help lower your blood pressure and reduce your anxieties. We like low blood pressure AND less anxieties--but mostly we just love dogs!!

Anatomy of a Carnival June 8, 2011

We had a carnival here in our gym. Joyce planned it and we originally wanted to have it on Friday the 13th (in May), but circumstances made it so we had to cancel that date. Then Dixie from Day Care invited us to have lunch with her and the kids to celebrate their graduation. We of course agreed! We decided we would do the carnival then. FUN was had by all!!

Earl was also cool; we took turns holding him.

Show Me the Money May 19, 2011

The state of Illinois may be going down the tubes financially, but here in Lyndon--we are doing just fine. Joyce has started a new group called "Show Me the Money" where we try to polish up our money skills. I know what you are thinking. Could we send some Illinois politicians to your group?
Well, heck yes!!!
Joyce will teach them how to balance their budget, spend only what they have, and make good decisions on how they spend their (our) cash.

A hole in our hearts...

Winning Wheels lost someone very important to all of us. Paul Cruz died on Saturday, May 7, 2011. Paul was a friend to all.
Staff loved him.
Residents loved him.
Paul's death has left a hole in our hearts. He will be sorely missed. Below is a video montage of memories of Paul from DT.

On a bicycle built for two 5/05/2011

Ahh Spring...sooner or later it will be here! Here at DT we are getting in the spirit. Wheels let us bring their Duet Bike to Lyndon. Toni (from STRIVE) took her first ride on Tuesday with Tarik as her first victim--I mean resident.
Unfortunately, because it is the Mid-west, Tarik was suited up like it was December instead of May! However, fun was had by both driver and rider!!!

Goin' to the dogs... 4/29/2011

Wayne and Betty Snyder stopped in with their pooches the other day. They brought us chocolate bunnies to celebrate Easter! Yum!

Groovin' 4/21/2011

We would like to wish everyone a Happy Easter Season (even though it feels more like Christmas outside)!! Chuck was playing his "air guitar" and groovin' to the song on the radio. It made me think we all need to...
"Slow down, you move to fast. You gotta make the morning last. Kicking down the cobble stones, looking for fun and feeling Groovy!"

Yeah, this is Chuck--feeling groovy!!

"Girl Talk" 4/12/2011

Here at Day Treatment we are always experimenting with new groups and how we run things. Toni has graciously taken over the "Girl Talk" group. I wanted something with some more frou frou in it. Toni and the aides really deliver!! Everyone who wants (and who is female) get a make over on Tuesday mornings. If you ever come to visit on a Tuesday, just follow your nose--the ladies are in the room with all the lovely scents!

Elaine 3/31/2011

Day Treatment lost a good friend last weekend. Elaine Burian died last Sunday, March 27. She was our cook for many, many years. In reminiscing about Elaine, we remembered her great smile. Elaine was nice, funny and had a good sense of humor (a great plus around here!) Elaine was easy to talk to, she had a good repore with us. Elaine was fun to joke with and really cared about us. She was very dependable. She made the BEST potato salad and baked beans. Elaine worked very hard to make our picnic and Thanksgiving dinners special.
Elaine, it was great having you in our lives; we will miss you.

Black hawk College Visits Day Treatment 2/22/2011

Last week Larry Gillund and his students from Blackhawk College came to Day Treatment to give us all a work out!
Larry is the Director of the Physical Therapist Assistant Program at Blackhawk.
He and his students put us through the paces. We were able to take turns walking in either the lite gait or the 2nd Step.
Some of us who are unable to walk, enjoyed having our bodies stretched with range of motion exercises. All of us enjoyed meeting new people!!!

Happy Valentines Day! 2/14/2011

The Baking Club met today and made some really yummy chocolate for all of us to celebrate Valentines Day. It was quite tasty.
They (and everyone at DT) would like to wish everyone a Happy Valentines Day!
We are happy. The sun is out. The weather is above freezing. And we are eating chocolate. Who could ask for anything more?

Baking Club smiling!

Losing Side of a bet... 2/9/2011

So after SUPER BOWL, we had some really happy residents (Go Packers!) and some really NOT happy residents. Which leads me to Tarik, Tarik came to DT on Monday and I noticed his fingernails were discolored. My first reaction--QUICK get Joyce! Tarik has a fungus or something!! But then Tarik looked at me and said, "That's what I get for making a bet!" Tarik is not a Packer fan and he made the mistake of betting against them in the Super Bowl. So he had to pay up. Tarik has nails that match the colors of the Green Bay Packers!
And you don't think we have fun around here--notice the absolute thrilled look on Tarik's face

not thrilled!

Let's skate!! 2/4/2011

I hope everyone survive the BLIZZARD of 2011. We all have a story to tell about a snow drift, an icy road, or a white-out!
YEE-OW! What a storm
Last week STRIVE went to Dixon to have a party at the local skating rink. It was a get out of the house, forget the gray, snowy days and have some fun party! DT staff went along to assist with the party. A great time was had by all.
